The Adventure Begins-Prologue
In the tiny village of Wheatland, a pair of brothers are about to begin their adventures out into the world. Requested by the local scientist/biologist to research all regional species of creatures the two are this day preparing to depart on their long trip from one end of this land to the other. As they pack they quickly double check all of the things they will need on their long trip.

“Did you pack an extra pair of socks?” Mrs. Davenport asks. Their mother is a bit skeptical about this undertaking, but is still supportive of the idea that the boys go out and see the world. “Yes mom, we’ve packed 2 extra pairs of socks each, as well as underwear and pajamas.” Marcus is beginning to grow weary of these continual disturbances, and would like to get going as soon as possible. It was actually his idea to get out and see the world for a change, but his brother was the one approached by Professor Ferne for the studies.

“Mom, do you have any extra batteries? I just want to make sure my phone doesn’t run out of power in the first day.” Matthew has been recharging his phone, but is a bit more apprehensive about the whole idea. It would be a nice idea to try and see new places, but the thought of not being in the comfort of their town and in unknown places is a bit scary for Matt. He double checked his backpack again, and finally agreed that all things are finally in order.

Though the two Davenport brothers are twins, they could not be more different. Marcus is an outgoing student at their local school and already knows several friends from across the Michi region that they will be exploring. His backpack is a little smaller and lighter than Matt’s since he doesn’t think they will need to carry as much between towns. “Ok, yeah……we should be in that area in about a week. We’ll probably have to pick up some supplies anyway. Ok, see you soon.” Marcus is making a few final calls to his friends. He hopes that they will be able to help with their research as well as just to hang-out.

It was still early in the morning, and the sun had just risen a few hours ago. Mr. Davenport walked in from his work in the garage, and asked a few minor questions about how the boys were doing and if they were really ready to set out. They had spent the previous week preparing bicycles to use to travel across parts of the Michi region, as walking would be hard for certain parts.

Finally, they checked their final pieces of equipment, and possibly the most important for this journey, their pocket monsters. They had gone to some trouble to find and capture them a few weeks ago with the help of their friend Jamieson. In the areas around their city there were several places to look for such creatures, but the really rare ones were just that “Rare”. There had been sightings of an occasional zigzagoon, or sentret, but not much else really came by their region.

Matthew had chosen a meowth, as it was probably the easier of the two they had managed to catch so far. Marcus had chosen a geodude, and that one had really given them trouble, especially given its rock like skin and sturdy nature. Even with help from Jamieson, his brother Ian and his sister Katie they had taken nearly 2-3 hours to find one and another hour to wear it down and catch. They also checked their support equipment for their travel partners. Each had packed a few potions to heal their monster if it was hurt, and a full heal in case it was in real trouble.

Marc strapped his water bottle to his bike, Matt checked his bike compass and prepared to say goodbye. “We’ll be sure to call when we get to Cement City. It’s only a day’s ride northeast, and there should be a few other places to call from along the way.” They set their pedals to their feet and waved good bye as they cycled down the road. Their mother and father waved and soon were beyond the horizon.

The country was open and hilly for the first few miles. From atop a hill they looked down at their small town, they sun now almost overhead. It was the end of May and the roads were starting to become busier as trainers started their yearly quest to earn the 8 badges required to enter the Pokémon tournament in August. Even if they did manage to collect all 8 regional badges, they would still need to compete in 4 or 5 rounds of elimination against other trainers before facing the ‘Elite 4.” These elite trainers were rumored to be among the toughest in the region, and would have to be faced all in a row; a single defeat would mean immediate elimination from the tournament. Adding to the difficulties was the fact that the “Elite 4” was constantly changing, so you could never be sure who or what types you would face.

At last, if they survived the 4, they then faced any other trainers who also had been victorious against the 4. Usually by this point there were fewer than a dozen left to compete for the title of “Champion.” In a few rare cases one individual had been champion for 2 or 3 years in a row, though it had only happen once in the past 10 years. Also there had been years where no one had managed to defeat all 4 of the elites, and thus there was no champion. Those years had been some of the least memorable, as the battles for the championship were quite magnificent.

In their minds they were glad to not be trainers and under that kind of pressure to win the 8 regional badges, and then have to train to prepare for the final battles at the end of July. They kept biking for a few more miles before coming to a grassy clearing along the road. They took a little time out and rested their tired legs, and gave their Pokémon a chance to get out and exercise themselves. Marc’s geodude exited its ball and let out a glad “Geodude!” It was strange for a rock-type to feel the need to get out of the ball, as most of its body looked like a roughly shaped ball.

Yet, just as soon as it had a chance to dig up a small patch of ground it just went back to resting. As it reclined its head on its oversized arms, Matt let his meowth out of its ball. Unlike the lazy nature of Marc’s geodude, Matt’s meowth was slightly more inclined to do what Matt told it to do. “Meowth, scratch that tree.” The meowth started scratching the tree, and as soon as it felt it had done enough, it sharpened its claws a little. It looked back at Matt for a signal of approval, and as soon as Matt glanced back it climbed up the tree and began looking out over the area from its new vantage point.

Marc started to eat one of his energy bars, and suddenly the geodude woke up from its nap. “Geodude, dude!” It looked like it was begging for a taste of the food that its owner was eating. “Wanna try a bit?” “Dude, dude!” Marc gave it a piece and the geodude set to enjoying its meal, loudly munching its own portion of the chocolate bar. “Could you make him eat that a little quieter?” Matt was trying to relax as well, but didn’t seem to approve of the loud munching sounds the geodude was making. “You know how he is.” Was Marc’s reply, “He doesn’t really think much of quiet, but then he’s a rock isn’t he?”

Matt decided to let it rest for now, since they would need to start searching the area soon and begin keeping track of the Pokémon types and species in the area. The plan was to get to Cement City first, stock up on supplies, and then start searching the areas around Wheatland. Or at least that was the initial plan, but Matt knew that Marc wouldn’t stick around too long, and was looking forward to them going on their separate ways. It would actually work to their benefit if Marc and Matt split their travels; at the very least they could record the ones they did see on a pokedex network program that Matt could go over later at the Poke centers.

Soon they packed up and were making more progress to Cement City. Matt had checked the map, and they would be there in a few more miles, or at least the bordering areas of the city. As they biked down the roads, Matt had only noticed a few pidgeys and spearows, but not any other types. The road was mostly wooded, and it was now past noon, so there were more people on the well paved biking route. Occasionally they had stopped to see some of the younger trainers’ battle, but it was mostly just kid trainers who didn’t have much experience yet, and would be too young to tackle the 8 badges yet.

Anybody could be a Pokémon trainer, and that had always been one of the reasons for so many trainers. It didn’t matter if you were a 6 year old boy, an 80 year old grandparent, a busy parent, or angst-filled teenager, it was something everyone could enjoy doing. Neither Davenport had taken much interest in that particular aspect of Pokémon, so neither Matt nor Marc had chosen to register as a trainer.

Finally the route opened up to a grassy hilly area, and it was up and down biking trails from the forests to the city now. Just as the landscape had changed, so too did the types of Pokémon present. The pidgey and spearow were nowhere to be seen, instead a few doduo were racing over the soft grassy plains. There were a few wingull in the air, with a few larger butterfree drifting on the gusts of wind higher up. Matt thought he saw a Golem in the far distance, but it could have been a trick of the light, since they were much larger and heavier than any other types present. A chansey was prancing happily alongside one of the trails next to its owner; it seemed to really be enjoying the mild summer breeze.

Then it all happened so fast. A sandshrew happened to be burrowing out and Matt’s bike hit the edge of the hole, sending both Matt and the bike flying out of control. Matt hit the ground hard, and rolled to avoid getting anymore hurt. Marc stopped and doubled back to see how Matt was doing. As Matt looked up, a certain instinct took over, and he sent out his meowth. He’d wanted to catch a sandshrew for a while now, but none had ever been sighted in Wheatland, so now was his first chance. “Meowth, scratch!” The meowth closed the distance quickly, but not quickly enough as the sandshrew dug into the ground and attacked the meowth as it approached the hole.

Marc sent his geodude into the fray, also hoping to get in on the catch. “Geodude, tackle it!” The geodude launched itself at the sandshrew, and managed to deliver what looked like a solid body blow. The sandshrew recovered quickly and began flinging dirt at the geodude in an attempt to make it lose sight of its target. “Geodude, hit it again!” The geodude tried to hit the sandshrew but the dirt had had its effect on the geodude as he missed and face planted into the grass.

The sandshrew took this chance to flee quickly back into its burrow and disappeared from sight. “Why did you try and catch it? I had my meowth out first, it was my catch!” Matt was angry that Marc would take this chance to catch the same one he had targeted. “Hey, I thought it was a fair catch. Your meowth was a little busy trying to free itself from the dirt!” Marc was equally angry at his brother for thinking there was some rule against 2 people trying to catch the same one. The two continued to argue until they noticed that neither of their Pokémon was taking any interest in their argument. The meowth had just curled up into a ball and started resting, while the geodude was rolling around like a strange rock shaped ball and singing, “Geodude, dude, dude, dude, geo.”

This comical little act had the effect of calming Matt’s and Marc’s nerves, and they quickly set things to right and were back on their way. “At least neither of our Pokémon was hurt, so I guess that’s a good thing.” “Yeah, I guess.” Keeping their eye out for any other species, they didn’t find anything new. The hills went by, and they waved at passing Pokémon and owners alike. It was relaxing to see people out with their Pokémon enjoying the nice weather.

Chapter 4-Friendly encounters of the 3rd Kind
Looking over a hill Matt could see a large patch of forest that seemed to stretch to the north with no end in sight. It was a sea of trees, and possibly thousands of unknown things lurking about in its shadowy niches. The sun was up so high that it was starting to glare his vision, so he had to cover his eyes with his hands. Looking around he couldn’t find Jessie or any of his Pokémon near.

As he tried to walk down the hill he felt a gust of wind overhead, and then saw a large bird-like creature fly past him into the forest below. Even with all his research he couldn’t recognize the markings on its back or head, and hardly had a chance to even see its color before disappearing.

Matt woke up, feeling a little sore. It was still something he had to get used to; sleeping on the ground out in the field. Jessie was already packing up her sleeping bag, and was now brushing her teeth, as she looked down at Matt. “Nice P.J.s,” Matt felt a bit embarrassed. He was so used to wearing a separate set of pajamas for sleeping; it never occurred to him that most other trainers or travelers simply just slept in their clothes.

His meowth by now was up and around, chasing some caterpie from their camp site. Matt packed up his sleeping bag as well, and changed into his travel clothes, but at a decent distance from Jessie, still feeling a bit shy. By the time he got back Jessie had taken care of the fire pit and was feeding her vulpix and eevee snacks from her bag. Matt had one of his sandwiches for breakfast and shared part of it with his meowth, when it had finished chasing any other things around the campsite.

He was just about to finish his sandwich when he heard a ring from his bag. Dropping the last bite of his breakfast, he rushed to his bag to make sure he didn’t’ miss the call. “Hello, hello? This is Matt.” “Where have you been Matt?” It was Marc, but he sounded a little annoyed. “I sent you a text yesterday but you never answered. What happened?”

“It’s a long story actually. How have you been though?” Matt answered back. “Well…. I got lost on my way to Cascade city, and wound up on the road to Ann Arbor. I was half way there before I figured it out and had to back-track. On the way I met someone who was also on their way to Cascades so we decided to team-up for a little while.” “That sounds good. So do you think we could meet in Cascades tomorrow? We just finished up at the ruins and can tell you the whole story in detail when we meet.”

In the back ground Matt could hear a different voice asking questions about the conversation. “Is that the brother you’ve told me about? Is he cute?” Matt could already guess it was probably a girl, but she sounded fairly aggressive when compared to Jessie. “He’s my brother, so I don’t know if that’s saying much.” Marc said in the background as he started to talk to Matt again. “Tomorrow will be fine, we’ll call you when get to the city limits.” “Ok.” And Marc hung up the phone.

So they were going to meet again, it had only been 2 or 3 days, but with so much happening now maybe it was a good chance to catch-up on things. They had parted quickly last time and hadn’t really made any plans for staying in touch. “Who was that?” Jessie asked as she checked some final parts on her bike. “Oh, it’s Marc. He’s heading towards Cascades. He made a mistake and ended up on the route to Ann Arbor.”

“That’ll be nice. I envy you. I don’t have any siblings, so it’s kind of lonely being an only child.” Matt packed up his sleeping roll and added it to his backpack. It felt much lighter than a few days ago, but mostly because he had eaten most of his snacks, or he’d lost them while being chased through the mansion. He double checked his belt making sure he had his haunter, and made sure he hadn’t left anything behind.

Finally Matt’s meowth jumped on to his back hoping to catch a ride in the fresh air like Jessie’s vulpix, but Matt didn’t have the space. Maybe he could attach a basket when they got to town, or get an extension on his bike seat for his bag. He returned his meowth to its poke-ball attached that to his belt. Jessie gave him a frown, but decided maybe he was right this time; she barely had space in her basket for both her vulpix and eevee now.

With all their belongings packed, secured, and accounted for they started off the dirt path towards the main route north. The sun was high in the sky now, beating down on them with a constant glare, but the going was pretty good. The road was mostly flat as they made their way past Wheatland and on through the wooded route north.

They took a break around 2 p.m. that day, just as they passed the Wheatland city limits. There was a nice park with a few small bridges over a tiny stream, a place to park their bikes, and several picnic tables around the park for people passing by. As they parked their bikes, Venus jumped out of the bike basket and started walking around. The eevee was a little more hesitant to jump out and waited for Jessie to take it out of the basket.

Matt let his meowth out and it too started wandering around. He didn’t feel like letting his haunter out yet, since it may scare people and he didn’t know much about its behavior in public. They stared walking down a path to the park clearing and towards one of the closer picnic tables. There was a mild breeze kicking up as they sat down to rest for a bit, they had been biking for almost 3 hours and it was nice to have a break from the work. Looking around they saw a family or two with some children playing around the small stone bridges.

Following the children were their or their parents’ Pokémon. One was a corphish; scurrying to keep up with them, while the other was a starmie; levitating above the ground and making sure they weren’t in any danger. The corphish seemed to have a fairly hard time keeping up with the children as they continued to explore the park. From a distance it looked as though they were taunting the poor water Pokémon and just playing with it by running away. The starmie had no such trouble, as it could float around effortlessly, but they seemed to only enjoy pestering the corphish as it was bound by gravity and had to put in extra effort to maintain its pace.

Off a little way to their left Matt and Jessie could see a street vendor selling some snacks. “Jessie, are you hungry?” Matt asked, wondering just what it was that smelled so good over at the cart. “A little, but I don’t feel like lunch just yet.” Matt took that as a yes and headed over to the cart. Matt’s meowth saw him start walking and quickly joined alongside him towards the snack vendor’s cart.

“Sugar apples, sugar-cakes, and fluffed sugar. Only 100 poke-dollars.” The vendor was saying out loud as small groups of people continued to walk by or have a look see at his wares. “Well, well, well. Anything I can get you and your meowth. A fine one too if I may say.” His meowth sat back and looked up at the plump street vendor looked unperturbed by the comment. “Hmmm, I’ll guess I’ll take one of each. It all looks tasty.” With that Matt handed over 300 poke-dollars and the man handed him the colorful and delicious smelling snacks.

His meowth was looking ever more intent at Matt, now that he had some succulent smelling goodies, and was nearly jumping for a closer whiff of the food. “Oh, that sugar-fluff looks tempting.” Jessie said as Matt sat back down. Venus had now parked herself next to his meowth, and Jessie’s eevee was looking cutely up at Matt. Matt took out the sugar-cake and broke it into equal pieces for the three Pokémon now surrounding him.

His meowth quickly ran off with its piece a short distance and started eating greedily. Venus took her piece and walked back to Jessie, preferring her to feed her with smaller pieces at a time, while the eevee at its piece at a slow relaxed pace. Matt gave Jessie the sugar-fluff and he ate the sugar apple, which was fairly tricky to eat since it was so sticky. While they were all enjoying their snack Matt took a moment to count up all the Pokémon they seen along their bike ride up to now.

“Well, it looks like we managed to catch a glimpse of a poochyena, some zigzagoon, and wingull or two.” Matt said as he continued to carefully eat his snack. “Well, most Pokémon don’t cross or go near roads. Bit dangerous, and most wild ones are afraid of people.” Jessie stated as she took another piece of her sugar-fluff. “Guess we’ll have to take more of the back routes to get more data, or abandon the main routes altogether.” Matt didn’t like the prospect of hiking through rough wooded country in summer; it sounded uncomfortable no matter how he thought about it.

Looking on, Matt’s meowth had finished eating the cake and was wandering around the park lazily. It must have been nice not to have to go anywhere, or do anything. He himself was not much of an athlete or in particularly good condition. The bike rides were tough at the outset, but they seemed to pass easier as he got used to the distance. Jessie’s vulpix Venus and her eevee were chasing each other around near the picnic table.

Chapter 2-Splitting the difference
Matt woke first and was also the first to get his things cleared up. He was hoping to catch Jessica and ask her about her plans before she left. Jessica was still not awake so Matt just sat and waited in the lobby for either Marc or Jessica to wake up. After a few minutes Matt started to get bored and let his meowth out of its pokeball. The meowth stretched and starting milling around the lobby, letting its curiosity run free. He hadn’t been let out of the pokeball to roam for a few hours now, and it felt good for it to run free.

Surprisingly the meowth brought back a shiny coin from somewhere within the poke-center. Matt had no idea what it was used for, since the coin was very different from the poke-dollars often used by nearly all commercial industries. The meowth went back to chasing its shadow across the smoothly polished floor of the poke-center. It was rather amusing to watch this cat Pokémon to walk in one direction, but as it noticed its shadow from one of the windows it felt compelled to give chase.

As the doors opened automatically, the meowth ran out and Matt soon was chasing his Pokémon out into the streets. Thankfully there was no traffic at this point in the morning, but it was still a bit stressful to see his favorite Pokémon running pell-mell for no obvious reason. It wasn’t until he looked up, that he understood; his meowth was chasing a sentret that had wandered into town on its own. Matt’s meowth was gaining ground, and it had almost caught up with the sentret when the pursued Pokémon turned and hopped onto the tip of its tail scared.

The meowth stopped short and started rearing up for an attack. Meowth jumped, and the sentret was thrown off balance by the attack. The two were soon locked into scuffle and it was hard to Matt to decide what to do, if he called back his meowth he wouldn’t be able to catch the sentret or get any real information. On the other hand, he didn’t want meowth to get injured so early in the morning. Luckily for Matt meowth managed to break free and the sentret turned to face it rather than running.

With this golden opportunity, Matt pulled out his Pokedex-regional analyzer. Unlike most Pokedex, this one would actually track the individual Pokémon no matter where it went once it was identified. The pokedex clicked and then blipped as a light registered the particular data on his device. Just as a little red light flicked on, the sentret scurried away and was gone into the tall grass. “Guess that’s the best chance we can get for now.”

Matt walked back to the poke-center and noticed that Marc was now eating his breakfast. Matt had been so busy just keeping up with his meowth that he had forgotten to get a breakfast and his grumbling stomach didn’t hide that fact. “Is that a large Pokémon, or your stomach Matt?” Marc had just finished drinking his juice box, and had started packing up his rice bowl and chopsticks.
Jessie had just walked out in her shorts and a blue t-shirt. She was carrying a small stuffed snorlax doll with her as she rubbed her eyes. Her vulpix looked very lively and was ready for another day of travelling. “Wow, do you guys always wake up this early? I couldn’t bear having to normally start my days like this.” She said as she sat down at the table with Marc. She quickly snatched a slice of bread from Marc’s breakfast tray. He decided to just ignore it as she took the other two pieces of bread, just glancing but otherwise unperturbed.

“I just saw a sentret; well meowth actually started chasing it and I just followed along.” Matt started to explain, but the other two seemed a bit more interested in just waking up, simply nodding in agreement to what he was saying. Matt went back to the room and got some snacks and sat down beside his brother. He didn’t have many snacks left, so would have to pick some up before they left for the day’s journey.

“So, Jessie, where do you plan to go once you’re all packed and ready?” Marc asked casually. “I think it best to check out the ruins in Wheatland before heading to Cascades. I don’t have much data on ghost-type Pokémon so maybe I can see what I can find.” She was just finishing with the last slice of berry-bread. “How about you guys? What are you plans now that it’s about time to head out?”

“You know, now that I think about it, maybe a ghost type would be a good addition to my team. You never know what might happen out there. You wouldn’t mind if I tag along with you do you?” Matt really didn’t have much experience with ghost types either, so thought it might be a good chance to make a friend and learn some new things as well. “Sure. Just don’t cause trouble for me, ok?” Marc, reclining now just sighed and thought for a moment.

“Well, I guess this is where you and I part ways Matt.” Marc had in a way already decided that it was best for both of them if they split and took this journey at separate paces. “We can cover more ground and get more research done if we take different routes.” “I’ll call mom, and give her the details.” Matt wanted to do something to make things work out as easily as possible.

“We’ll call you if we make any progress.” Matt and Jessie made a final check on their bikes and Marc was loading a few things into his bag. It was a good day; if a little cool for May. There was a light breeze from the East, but otherwise it felt like a nice day for taking a trip anywhere. Matt waved to Marc as he and Jessie started down one of the bike paths out of town. The route seemed a little unfamiliar at first, but thinking back he and Marc had taken this route some years back. He couldn’t immediately remember why they hadn’t taken this path until they were out of the city limits.

After a few kilometers they stopped at a rest-point to check the map and see how much progress they were making. Jessie’s vulpix had been riding for most of the ride in the front basket on her bike. The vulpix looked very content as it let the wind whip through its hair and tails. The vulpix was now sitting next to Jessie as she looked over the map on one of the benches. It started to nudge Jessie to pet it, and Jessie absentmindedly started rubbing its forehead. Matt couldn’t help but be a little jealous of the bond they seemed to share, but he had only just recently acquired a Pokémon of his own.

Matt’s meowth was clawing the back of the bench and then started to wander around. Matt was already sensing that his meowth would probably wander off if it was given half a chance to do so. “Jessie, how long have you had your vulpix? You two seem really close.” Jessie looked up and asked him to repeat the question; she had been lost in thoughts for the moment. “Oh, you mean Venus? I’ve had her since I was 5. My dad got her for me so I could have someone look after me if I decided to go on walks.”

“Venus? Well she certainly is cute.” Matt said. “She’s not cute, she’s beautiful. That’s why I call her Venus. What do you call your meowth?” “I haven’t thought about a name for him yet, I just caught him a few months ago.” Jessie narrowed her eyes and listened very intently for a moment. “I guess that’s ok, since you haven’t known him long. But, if he’s going to be your main companion you should really think about giving him a nickname. He may start to be resentful if you don’t show enough love and support.” “I’ll try to come up with a good name.” Matt responded.

He really liked his meowth, but he hadn’t quite given a nickname any thought. The road became harder to bike down as they crossed an old bridge and onto a dark road. The trees were so tall here that they shaded the entire route, and the road was no longer paved or even well maintained. They could see a few weedle crawling along, as well as a kakuna or two hanging from the trees, but not much else.

Welcome to the PokeMon Michi Region Wiki
The Michi Region is a custom campaign settings for PokeMon. Michi Region is based loosely around the Midwest of the United States of America. The setting and this wiki are both still a work in progress.

The primary goal of this wiki is to provide a space for the co-authors to build out the universe. We have no <i>current</i> plans to make this into a game mod (although that sounds like an AMAZING idea). At this time, we intend to focus on the written stories.

Chapter-3 A Gastly Encounter
Then they saw it, a large open field and drive way up to a forbidding looking house. More than a house actually, it was a mansion. Matt had lived in the area all his life, but hadn’t heard any stories about the mansion, who had owned it, and why it had been abandoned. As they parked their bikes they looked around. Matt felt a chill around the entire area, and looking at the dark, decrepit house just made him feel very uneasy.

“Can we look around outside first? Just to be safe.” Matt said as he cautiously locked up his bike, and adjusted his pack. “Really? Outside? I thought you wanted to learn something about ghost-type Pokémon.” Jessie let her vulpix take the lead. It seemed alert, but not unsettled by the atmosphere. Maybe he was just getting cold feet. Matt brought out his meowth, but it only sat down, staring up at Matt. “What? I didn’t do anything.” Matt said in a slightly angry voice.

“Matt, you need to be a better trainer. He won’t listen to you if you’re just going to let him do all the work. Even researchers need to treat their Pokémon with respect and love.” Jessie sped up to her vulpix which was now at the front of the mansion. Matt quickly picked up his pace to Jessie as she walked up the creaking and rickety wooden steps.

The whole mansion looked like no one had lived there for years. The front doors were falling off the hinges almost as they entered into the foyer. There were doors on both sides of the entryway as well as in front of them going up the stairs, and a farther hidden door below the stairs. It looked as if there used to be rugs on the floors, but they had long since been removed or destroyed.

Though it was still day-light outside Matt couldn’t shake the feeling of overhanging darkness. “Aughh!!!!” At that moment Matt felt something rubbing around his shins and screamed for a moment. Jessie spun around quickly and Venus was ready standing in an active defensive stance as Matt finally calmed down. His meowth was rubbing itself against him as he looked down.

There was a slight crack and then a rusted chandelier crashed down in the space between Matt and Jessie. Both of them stood silently looking to each other for an answer. It was extremely tense for a moment as Matt strained to listen for anything. He was still feeling very chill, and now he was really wishing he hadn’t come or at least had more of a team than just one Pokémon.

Jessie and her vulpix slid over to the right side of the room, just beyond the fallen chandelier. Looking up they could see eerie blue flames swirling around above them. Suddenly they were flying toward Jessie’s vulpix and Matt’s meowth. Venus stood and braced as the flames bounced harmlessly off her, but Matt’s meowth had to scurry around to avoid being burned. Matt could now see the source of this trouble; 2 gastlys were floating around above their heads, chuckling to themselves.

Thinking quickly Venus focused and managed to get the attention of one of the gastly that was tormenting them. The gastly moved in slowly, looking for a way to best unnerve her, but just before it came within reach Venus shifted her stance and hit with a faint attack, throwing the gastly totally off balance and knocking it out. Several other gastly were now appearing from the ceiling at the clear prodding of the one left floating above them.

“We need to get away from those gastly, now!” Matt said in a moment of clear thought. It would be madness to fight all of them, so they should try to get somewhere safer before fighting back. Matt grabbed Jessie hand, not thinking really of anything but getting away from the group of increasing gastly. They ran to the kitchen to the right of the entryway followed by their Pokémon.

As they slammed the door behind them, Matt’s meowth leapt up on the counter and continued to simply keep a watch out, as Jessie’s vulpix Venus stood ready for action. Matt’s meowth was the first to notice some old kitchen knives start rattling around, and called to Matt’s and Jessie’s attention. Two of the drawers sprung to life and several knives began levitating trying to balance themselves in mid-air before directing themselves toward their targets.

“Venus! Flamethrower!” Venus let out a blast of flames, engulfing the knives and they fell to the floor lifeless. More knives started floating out of the draw and this time they made a run past the knives into the dining room. The dining room was calmer by comparison, since the gastly seemed less interested in trying to harm them since escaping the kitchen. They also seemed a bit weary of vulpix’s flames.

Where the kitchen had been fairly well-lit the dining room was much darker, as most of the lights were long since burned out and windows were far fewer. “Ok, now where should go Matt?” Jessie asked, as she carefully checked her vulpix for any injuries. Matt’s meowth was still just wandering around, almost totally ignorant of the situation they were in. “I haven’t had a chance to scan any of them on my pokedex yet, so we need to at least single one of them out for my scanner to pick it up.” Matt said.

“They have us outnumbered now, but if we keep them moving, maybe they’ll get tired and then we can single one out?” Jessie suggested as she brushed some dust off Venus’s tail. “I can’t think of any other plan, so let’s just give that a try for now.” Matt said as he caught his breath for a second. Things hadn’t been this tough since they caught Marc’s geodude a few months back. Straightening up Matt leaned on one of the old chairs around the dining room table, just as the walls started to vibrate. There were bulges slowly bubbling out over the old crackling wallpaper, as the gastly were trying to move into the dining room now.

It was well known that gastly could move through solid objects, being ghosts and all. But, it seemed they enjoyed toying with them for the moment, maybe they just hadn’t had this much fun in a while. Maybe even a little lonely since people tended to avoid the old Raymond ruins. Matt and Jessie moved to one of the large closed doors on the opposite end of the dining room, past the large dining table lined with dusty chairs.

Matt yanked the door open quickly, but was met by several more gastly, who had been waiting for him to open the door. Matt yelled and fell back for a moment, but Jessie wasn’t too shaken to lose focus. “Venus!” By now Venus knew what to do, and loosed another blast of flames at the open door way. The gastly quickly scattered this time, and let the group pass. Matt got up, as this time Jessie took the lead and they rushed out of the dining room, turned a hard right, went up some stairs, down more stairs, and found themselves in what looked like the servant’s quarters.

As soon as they stopped Matt lurched over in exhaustion. “Do we really have to run this fast? I’m still just a rookie researcher.” He said as he slumped down on a pile of old clothes. Jessie was tired too, but still not too winded to sit down. “That’s what makes it fun. Besides, I think those gastly will need a little time to find us again.” She was leaning up against the wall of the old servant’s quarters, looking around at the room.

It was a very dusty room with two small beds, and a small closet with what looked like servant’s clothes. Matt was sitting on a large pile of what had looked like clothes, and bed sheets, but as he relaxed he started to feel a little cold. Matt quickly jumped up, now remembering that same chill from the first time he had entered the house. Jumping up he grabbed the rags and looked down.

There, relaxing peacefully was a haunter. It didn’t even seem to mind that he had been sat on. There was even a slight snoring sound coming from it, as Matt carefully pulled out his pokedex and began scanning it. It really looked like it was just taking a rest, and they hadn’t seen any haunters in the group that was currently trying to scare them. Matt nervously snuck over to his meowth, now resting on one of the beds, thinking what to do next.

Matt’s meowth immediately, sensing his trainer nearby awoke and seemed to be ready for his order. “Meowth, attack that haunter.” Matt said. It was in a slightly ordering tone, but didn’t come from a trainer who was really willing to commit himself to a battle. His meowth stood up and straddled over to the haunter who was yawning now. The meowth started pawing at the haunter, but it didn’t even feel the swipes. “Meowth, scratch!” The meowth now started attacking with more force, but the haunter just turned over in its sleep.

“Matt, are you a complete novice? Normal-type moves don’t work on ghost types.” Matt felt dumbfounded, having forgotten some of the most basic things about Pokémon and their different types of attack moves. “Use odor sleuth first, then your attacks will start working.” Jessie said. It was at that moment that the haunter woke from its slumber and faced Matt’s meowth. “Odor sleuth!” Matt said clearly, as his meowth took a stance and focused its senses to locate the haunter.

The haunter, not willing to be taken completely unaware used spite, weakening meowth’s use of that move. His meowth was now pacing, keeping its full attention on the ghost Pokémon. “Meowth scratch it!” A weak move, but this time the haunter felt the blow and was pushed back a bit. Matt knew what was coming next before the haunter closed in. The haunter smiled a toothy grin and opened its mouth to reveal it large dark tongue. It tried to lick Matt’s meowth, but the move had no effect, just as the meowth’s attacks had not worked before.

“Scratch it again meowth.” The meowth attacked again, and the haunter was hit again. It was not weakened too much, but was feeling less energetic than it had at the start. The haunter then locked eyes with the meowth and started to glow a deep blue aura. A subtle but violent shock pulsed over Matt’s meowth, as the haunter took a very heavy blow. But strangely the meowth took a physical hit as well just as the haunter was recovering from the last attack.

“I think it used a curse on your meowth, Matt. He’s trying to take your meowth down before it does too much damage.” Matt knew he was in a bit of a bind now. The haunter was stronger than his meowth, and given enough time he’d lose his chance to catch it. Jessie was still watching from behind Matt, giving advice but otherwise not letting her vulpix take part in the battle; it was Matt’s fight to win or lose and she knew that.

Hoping his meowth was up to the task Matt knew he still had one more good chance to get the haunter. “Meowth, bite.” Matt said confidently, he knew the normal moves weren’t a good bet, but bite wasn’t a normal move, so it couldn’t do much worse. His meowth, weakened but still feeling fairly strong lunged at the haunter and bit into the ghost Pokémon. The haunter really felt the power of the attack and pulled away hard, but the meowth clamped down even harder with its bite.

The haunter was shaking wildly from side to side, trying to get loose of the cat Pokémon’s grip. The meowth continued to smack at the haunter while being swung around. After a few moments, and some more flailing, the meowth let go; weakened as it was now by the curse. The haunter was swaying back and forth, showing almost no sign of fight left. Matt knew what he had to do now, he reached into the side compartment of his back and pulled out and empty poke-ball.

He threw the ball squarely at the haunter, and watched as it connected, opened, and pulled the ghost into the ball. The ball hit the floor of the room with a light thud, and rolled for a second as the ball’s capture systems tried to lock the ghost into the ball securely. The little red light on the ball flashed on and off for several tense seconds. Matt could only hope he’d weakened it enough for the ball to hold the haunter, and wouldn’t have to continue the battle another round.

The ball jumped for a second, and Matt’s heart skipped a beat, but fell to the floor again, and the light turned off. For a second he didn’t know what to do. “He’s yours now.” Matt felt a flood of relief now that the battle was over, and his meowth relaxed its guard, no longer having to worry about taking any more damage.

Matt reached over to pick up the poke-ball, still not fully sure it wouldn’t hop up again. It felt warm actually, despite being a ghost-type, and he took a moment to put it onto his belt. “Well that’s all over with, where should we go now? My guess is they avoided this room because of the haunter. Now he’s gone, we should be on the move.” Jessie and her vulpix walked over to the door of the room, and listened for any more sounds.

The mansion had quieted down considerably since they had entered. For whatever reason, they had slipped back into silence, and waiting. Jessie cracked the door open just a little to sneak a peek into the hallway, and saw a few gastly just lazily hovering around. Matt and Jessie slipped out the door and into the hallway with little difficulty as they gastly seemed to be congregating somewhere else this time.

The few that had been hovering around the hallway now floated into the entryway and then back into the kitchen. Several more came out of the attic, glanced over at them, but simply paid them no attention as they went through the floor and into the basement. Their curiosity getting the better of them, Matt and Jessie walked over to the stairs that led down to the basement and decided they wanted to know why they had been left alone.

Getting over the smell of mildew the two could see a group of gastly now tormenting a solitary eevee. They seemed to delight in getting close enough that it felt cold, but never close enough to connect. At which point the eevee would try to tackle the gastly, but go straight through them and fall down. The gastly simply kept floating around the scared eevee, and just watched it attempt to attack them in vain.

Jessie, feeling sympathetic and a bit appalled by this behavior stepped in view of the gastly. “Hey! Over here gas heads!” Venus had also stepped out at her side, ready for action again. So far it seems Venus hadn’t been having any trouble with these ghosts and had taken no real signs of damage. “Confuse ray!” Several wavering, shimmering, lights began floating around in the air around several gastly, and in seconds they were bobbling around. Most of them didn’t even know who to attack, or how to get at them.

It was actually pretty funny seeing these ball shaped orbs trying to lick or bite each other, Venus, Jessie, Matt, or his meowth. When one of them did finally get a clear beat on one of them they would just attack back, knocking them back into the fray, to be attacked by several other confused gastly. While Matt and his meowth kept them busy near the bottom of the stairs, Jessie took this chance to pick up the exhausted eevee and make a run for the stairs.

The gastly were mostly over their confusion and had started to give more serious thought when attacking. At least twice they managed to hit Venus, but she held firm from each hit and sent them flying with a faint attack. Meowth was also getting tired, more from all the biting he had to do to keep them in check than the fighting or damage. The gastly seemed to be getting agitated from the attacks and were building themselves into a slightly less than friendly rage.

As Jessie reached the stairs and started to climb, the door at the top slammed shut. The gastly had stopped attacking and instead seemed satisfied with keeping them trapped. What had been an even dozen or so gastly had grown to something like a double dozen as some came from other parts of the house. Matt looked down at meowth, and he looked fairly tired after all of today’s adventure. He’d been chased through this house, avoided a falling chandelier, flying knives, slamming doors, lots of running, and finally a long fight with a haunter.

‘That was it!’ Matt thought. He reached back to his belt to the only other Pokémon he had. The haunter materialized in front of Matt, turned and looked a bit quizzically back at him, as if to say, “What do you want me to do about this?” Matt wasn’t feeling particularly playful at the moment and looked sternly back at his haunter. It seemed to understand and just stood its ground, staring back at the gastly. Matt hoped that the gastly feared the haunter more than the fighting, and would back off, and it looked like this time his guess was right.

The gastly slowly backed out of the basement, disappearing into the walls, ceiling, and out of the area in general. Jessie kicked hard and the door opened with no trouble this time. Matt, a bit spent managed to back out of the basement, up the stairs, and out of the mansion. Looking back he could see some gastly still looking out the windows in the attic, a bit longingly, but probably glad it was all over as well. They had had a good day, the first good day in would could have been months or years of haunting that old mansion.

Matt and Jessie got to their bikes, picked them up from the ground, and started to walk down the dusty dirt road back to the main route. “You may not be much of a trainer, but you kept your head in the game.” Jessie said, looking back at Matt. Venus was walking along side as the eevee had now taken the basket on her bike. The eevee looked completely exhausted, and just slept in the basket, its head over the edge of the basket in the light breeze. Matt looked down at his meowth, it had done a great job today. It had managed to fight off not only the gastly, but wear down a haunter in pitched battle.

Matt’s haunter floated beside him on the other side of his bike. He sure didn’t seem as scary now that they were outside of that mansion and back on the road. Matt had scanned both ghosts at the house, and was feeling more like a researcher than when he’d left Cement city. Though, if all field work was this tiring he didn’t know just how long he’d last.

The sun was now nearing the tops of the trees, and it was getting late. “Shall we press on or camp out tonight?” Matt was all for whatever caused the least difficulties for them. He had his sleeping back on his bike along with some snacks still in his bag, but not much else. He’d have to recharge his equipment at a poke-center when they got back into town. “Camping out seems like an ok idea. There should be a clearing a few miles south of here, we passed it yesterday.” Jessie said, sounding a bit tired as well, but in good spirits.

They reached a nice open spot just off the main route around 7 that afternoon. Matt set up a fire pit and Jessie had been out with her vulpix gathering wood. Matt’s meowth helped dig out the fire pit quickly, and seemed to listen to him more since the day before. It was nice to have a little respect for both of them, and they both seemed to reciprocate the feelings. His haunter was on this belt for now, but maybe he’d let him out at night to watch over the camp.

After a few sandwiches and some berries for their new friends they both went to sleep just as the fire had started to die down. Looking up at the clear night’s sky Matt was wondering if this was how so many trainers before had started their journeys. Out in the world for the first time and away from everything that had been their past lives, here was a new adventure and a new chance to be someone different. As Matt dozed off he couldn’t help but think about all that had happened in the past 72 hours of his life.

He’d met a new friend who had now joined him along his journey, he had managed to escape several close calls with some slightly violent if comical ghosts, and best of all grown closer to his meowth. His meowth was wandering around a bit, but seemed content to just slowly circle around the camp site and keep watch a while. Jessie’s vulpix was curled into a ball, covering itself with its tails, and her new eevee was snuggled up close to her sleeping bag. They looked so happy just resting there.

Chapter 1-Cement City
Over the next hill they could see the city before them finally, and none too soon. It was now well into the afternoon, with dusk quickly approaching, and that meant that the less savory types would come out and begin their sojourn. Not many people were out far from the city at nights, as it was known that many less friendly Pokémon chose that time to come out and traverse the fields. Murkrow could be nasty customers, especially since they even scared off ghost types at times and would be relentless in their attacking. Even if that was the case, the ghost types were hard to deal with unless you had a well trained Pokémon.

They had no trouble coasting down the slope into Cement city. It was a city that was known for the amount of stone it exported to other regions, as well as the variety of rock, ground, steel, and fighting type Pokémon that were employed to do this kind of hard work. Some of the buildings had a look like they were carved directly from rock and it gave the city a solid, if cold feeling to outsiders. At the northern end of town they could see the familiar red and white pattern of the Poke-center.

They deposited their Pokémon to be checked while they had a quick look around town. It wasn’t a particularly large city, but there were a good number of people out in the streets still just going from place to place. They spent a little while at a local restaurant enjoying a local specialty and some vegetables. After the meal they called home and checked to see that things were ok with their parents. “You made it ok then? No fighting?” Marc was quick to quell any doubts, since having a parent have to track you across the region would have been very embarrassing.

They finished their call and headed back to the poke-center to rest for the next day’s travelling. The poke-centers had in recent years come to function as hostels for the myriad of Pokémon trainers. They charged a minimal fee for a nightly stay, and would normally offer a simple breakfast as well. It was certainly a lucrative business, all the ‘Poke’ industries across the regions and the world as a whole. People would occasionally come from different regions and spend time in new parts of the world. Some of Marc’s more recent friends had visited from the Kanto region, and that was certainly a new experience for the whole family.

“Did you remember to set the alarm for 8:00 a.m.? We need to start early if we’re going to check this area.” Matt wanted to double check so they would have lots of time for work tomorrow. “Yeah, I set it already. Can we go to bed now?” Matt and Marc finished brushing their teeth and put on their travel pajamas. “I call top bunk!” Marc rushed up to the top bunk before Matt had a chance to even voice his preference. Either way Matt didn’t care much about the bunks, but the fact that Marc had gotten to pick first still rankled him a bit.

Outside the moon was only a quarter tonight, and it would be a fortnight before a full-moon. The two siblings settled into their beds and fell asleep quickly, and all was silent for the night’s sleep. It was still early in the summer, so the atmosphere at the poke-center was very lax, the real crowds would start in a few weeks, when all the trainers moved beyond their home areas. There was only one other trainer staying at the same center, so they had their choice of rooms. It was a known fact that most centers stayed open 24 hours, though it was rare for people to ever need their services so late unless there was an accident or an emergency.

<blockquote>
Matt was looking up at the sky from a grassy field. The clouds rolled lazily by, across the lightly orange sky of an afternoon. In the distance he could see a tree atop a large mountain. The rest of the mountain had some smaller trees, but this tree dominated the field of view, and seemed to be lording over the smaller trees below. At the foot of the mountain several hikers were walking by on a trail that wove around the mountain to the south.

A top the tree a lone figure was balanced among the highest branches, looking out over the vast stretches of land. It had an odd figure, as the head didn’t seem to turn, but it gave the impression that it was watching Matt’s every move. Matt suddenly had this strange feeling that the creature, whatever it was, was trying to talk to him. His head felt strange, almost as if there was a weird energy flowing through it, and he could sense things outside of his body.
</blockquote>

Matt woke up suddenly. It was still dark outside and he checked his watch just to see what time it was. “Oh no! Why so early?!” 5:34 a.m. The night sky wasn’t as dark as it had been the night before, and in the distance he could see the horizon with a few shafts of light peaking over the trees. “Why do these things happen to me?” Matt took a quick trip to the bathroom before returning to bed. “Maybe, I can still get a few more hours before the alarm goes off.” He thought hopefully as he rolled into the bed sheets. He had a lot of work in the morning, and this dream may just put him off focus trying to find something that may not be able to be found.

Bzzzzz!!!!! Marc slammed his hand down to turn off the alarm on his cell phone, but it took a few tries before he managed to shut it off. Matt had had a hard time sleeping fully since this little ‘vision’ so he was up quickly and putting on the rest of his travel equipment for the day. He had been looking forward to trying some of the new devices that Professor Ferne had created for this task. So far they had only managed to count around 10 or 15 different species, but they were mostly weaker bug and flying types. It still irked him that he hadn’t caught the sandshrew yesterday, but that would have to take a back seat.

Matt was already out in the commons area of the poke-center, and Marc was just attaching the rest of his gear. “I think I’ll check out the quarry here and see what other types they have here.” “But I wanted to check that place.” Matt had been slow to react so it seemed that Marc had the choice area today. “Guess that means I’ll check the poke-mart and see what we need.” Matt was a little irritated, as he was hoping to get another chance to catch a sandshrew.

They set out and went their separate paths, Marc across town and into the quarry and work area, Matt downtown to the poke-mart to stock-up on supplies. Matt took his time riding by on his bike. He had to admit it was kind of nice to be free from his brother and be on his own. They may have been brothers, but it didn’t mean they had to get along all the time. There was no rush to do shopping, as they hadn’t had any real challenges yet. Those would start to appear once they headed towards the cities with Pokémon trainers and the gyms. The season may be over for badges, but it was known that some gym leaders liked to use this time to sharpen their skills on trainers.

After about 30 minutes of slow biking Matt could see the large blue and white building at the cross-roads of town. There weren’t many people yet since it was still around 9 a.m., and Cement city wasn’t that large of a city. This poke-mart was only about the size of a regular convenience store, so the selection was limited to say the least. A few different snacks for people and Pokémon alike, just two types of poke-balls, potions, super potions, and a few repel sprays that looked as if they had seen a rough trip. Matt ended up buying two bottles of water, a snack bar, and a six-pack of poke-balls, just in case they had the urge to catch something.

As he paid for his things he noticed a few suspicious people walking towards the poke-mart. They all wore what looked like baggy black-cargo pants, red tank-tops, and black sun-glasses. The whole outfit reeked of someone absolutely out of place in such a small town, where most people tended to just wear what was comfortable. They walked up confidently to the side of the poke-mart where the bikes were parked, and seemed to be waiting. Matt packed his things into the bag and quietly exited the store to leave before things went bad.

“Hey, hands off my Vulpix!” A girl had been surrounded by the group and one of them had just tried to carry her Vulpix away. “Vulpix, flamethrower!” A blast of fire exploded out around the smaller Pokémon, and the man in black backed away quickly to avoid getting burned. “So you won’t hand it over!?” “We’ll just take it the hard way then. Go, Poochyena!” The Poochyena emerged from the pokeball and looked quite ready for battle.

Matt couldn’t help but be a little curious about the battle, as he hadn’t seen a real battle up close. The Poochyena began circling the Vulpix, but it stood firm and remained focused. “Poochyena, bite! See how you like having to fight up close!” But unexpectedly the Vulpix didn’t even flinch. It calmly stood its ground and waited for the right moment to strike. “Vulpix, show them what you’ve got.” The girl’s Vulpix sprayed flames at the Poochyena, and it could only brace for the attack, as it was send off its feet by the attack.

The rest of the group of outsiders started getting ready to step in, readying to send out their own Pokémon into the fray. Just as he got to within range of the battle Matt did something so very uncommon for his character, he sent out his Meowth. “Meowth, Scratch the Poochyena!” At that the group of people dressed in black all turned in surprise as the Meowth threw itself headlong into the Poochyena. The Poochyena had no chance to react as the Meowth went quickly for its face and gave it a solid hit with his paws.

The two other members sent out their Pokémon. It was evenly matched at first glance. Matt and the girl had a Meowth and Vulpix between them, and the team of outsiders sent out a Tangela and a Spearow. The girl’s Vulpix made short work of the Tangela, but not before it used poison powder. The Vulpix was quickly weakening, even as the Tangela went down. Matt tried to have his Meowth protect the Vulpix, but the Spearow was too quick and the Vulpix was nearly knocked out by a glancing Gust attack.

Matt knew he wasn’t a trainer, and wasn’t really one to get involved in battles if he could avoid it. The spearow as holding its position in the air above the Vulpix and the Meowth, waiting for the poison to take effect and drop the Vulpix. If the ruffians won, they would more than likely try and take the Vulpix and his Meowth. The Spearow dived and sent the Vulpix flying off its feet with a solid body blow. The girl ran to catch her Vulpix, leaving only Matt’s Meowth and the Spearow left in the battle.

“Rock throw!!” Somebody’s Geodude began throwing as many stones as it could find at the opposing spearow. Matt thought Marc had returned to helped, but was a little surprised when a tall barrel-chested man came running from across the street. The spearow tried to dodge the rocks, but was clipped by a handful and only just managed to stay air-borne. The outsiders knew they were asking for trouble if they stayed, since most small towns would have some older trainers who would be itching for a fight to help pass the time.

The older man came into view, and Matt could see that he was one of the quarry workers from the overalls he wore. Though his glasses gave the feeling of someone who was not just an ordinary worker. “Guess you can say this is your lucky day.” The one last battling outsider recalled his spearow and joined the others as they turned their backs and started stalking away. It took a little while before they were out of sight and things started to quiet down.

“Are you two alright?” The older man said as he walked up to Matt and the girl. “It’s nice to have a little excitement out here.” “Thank you.” Matt said. He was glad he had been saved the embarrassment of losing his first Pokémon battle and in front of a girl too. The girl brushed her backside off as she put her Vulpix back onto the ground, only to have it slump a little, still weakened by the poison attack it had taken.

"Thanks for the assist.” He didn’t have the chance to get a good look at the girl before or during the battle. She had fairly long blonde hair, and carried a blue satchel pack on her back. Matt also noticed the Pokedex pocket on the left side of her belt. She was really just of average build, and a few inches shorter than himself. “No problem.” Matt was kind of shocked and it was hard to think of anything for him to say without his mind hiccupping.

It took him a moment to realize that his meowth was sitting at attention in front of him, waiting for him to notice. “Meowth?” It was looking quizzically at him now. Matt quickly decided to give it a snack and took a Pokémon food pellet from his right-side pouch. “Meowth!” His meowth reared up as it could see the snack in Matt’s hand, just a few feet above its head. Matt let the food pellet drop and his meowth batted at the food for a moment before finally eating it.

“My name is Matthew.” He offered his hand and the girl accepted. “My name’s Jessica.” “You two should take that vulpix to the poke-center before it gets any weaker. Nothing worse than a fainted Pokémon.” The old man recalled his geodude and left quietly. Jessie lifted her vulpix off the ground and they began walking towards the poke-center. “Why not just recall the vulpix? It would be a lot easier to carry.” Jessie looked with a slight disbelief at Matt for a second. She had just done the lion’s share of the work in the battle and now Matt, the novice, was giving her hints?

“I know it’ll sound strange,” She started. “But, I don’t believe in putting my Pokémon in a pokeball. It must seem like imprisonment for them. To just shut them away and forget about them or carry them like baggage.” Matt had never thought about it before, but there were other people who would usually let their favorite Pokémon roam free when travelling. They continued down the street to the poke-center. It seemed like only minutes ago he had set out, but it had been nearly 3 hours now.

Back at the poke-center Matt checked his messages, and only found a quick reminder note from his mom, but nothing from Marc. Matt wrote to tell him what had happened and then took a seat across from Jessica in the lobby as they waited for her Vulpix to be healed. They ended up using a much larger healing chamber, usually reserved for severely injured Pokémon.

“So, what are you doing in Cement city?” Matt thought it might be nice to make a new friend while he had the chance, especially since he rarely had had these chances before. “I’m here working on my pokedex actually. Well not like a trainer, but more as a networker.” “Are you a researcher by any chance?” “Not exactly, but kind of in a way.” They continued for a while until the nurse called Jessica over to get her vulpix. It looked in much better shape now, and was happy to see Jessica. Matt also collected his meowth and they sat back down at the table.

“Why are ‘You’ in Cement city, if you don’t mind my asking?” Jessica now asked Matt. “Well, my brother and I are working on the pokedex for a researcher we know. We just started so there isn’t much we have so far.” It seemed as though the two had at least a fair deal in common. Both were more interested in Pokémon behavior and regional preferences than battles, though Jessica admitted to having some minor skills in training. “Where are you headed after this? Any place in particular you’re planning on going?” Jessica posed the question, but Matt actually hadn’t been too keen on planning where he would head next. In fact, Marc was the one who mostly decided where they would go, since he had the most connections across the Michi region.

Thankfully for Matt, he didn’t have to answer that question immediately as Marc just walked into the poke-center as he was floundering for an answer. Marc was dusted with chips from rocks and had dirt on both his knees, no doubt from whatever he had been up to today. “Don’t tell me you stayed here the whole time?” Matt was quickly annoyed by the presumptuous question, but before he could answer Jessica cut in. “Why does it matter to you?” Marc was surprised by the comment, since it came with an attitude he seldom dealt with from Matt. He was even more unsettled, when he saw Matt sitting across from a fairly pretty girl.

“Oh….” Marc slowly sat next to Matt, his eyes quickly darting back and forth between the two, trying to put it all together. “I must look like such a loser saying that. Sorry, he’s my brother, so I assumed…..” Marc tried to relax, and rephrase things so he wouldn’t get on her bad side, nothing like a bad first impression. “Well, just looking at you two now, it’s a little easier to make sense of it. Still doesn’t mean you can’t be a little more polite.” Jessica was glaring at Marc, watching his every move, waiting to see what he would do next.

“So, how did you two meet?” Marc had decided to shift the attention to Matt, and hopefully dig his way out of this unpleasant situation. “I was on my way out of the poke-mart, when she was attacked by a gang of guys in weird outfits.” “Actually they just wanted to steal my vulpix, but same thing.” Jessica interjected. Matt and Jessica explained what had happened that day; about the battle and how close they had come to losing, the old man who helped, and finally how they had ended up back at the poke-mart.

“Sounds like a busy day for you two. I wish I had had something like that to do.” Marc opened his pokedex and started to tell them about his day. Mostly he had talked to other people traveling through the city, and had a long call with one of his friends who lived in Cascade. “It seems they don’t have many types here. A few rock and ground types, but nothing of interest to me personally. Though they did have a few fighting types, but nothing of particular note. Onix, Geodudes or gravler, machop and a hitmonchan. Though there was something that looked like a Steelix, but I couldn’t get any closer to be sure.”

Both of them had hoped to hear news about sandshrew, but it looks like they didn’t really inhabit this town or its routes. Matt went over to one of the vending machines and got a few drinks for everyone. It looked like they would be spending another day in Cement city and they would have to move on tomorrow. “Oh, Jessica….Where do you live? You may want to get home soon so you don’t have to worry about travelling at night.” Matt was hoping she could at least get home safe while it was still daylight, as night time was usually a more dangerous time if travelling.

“Oh, I don’t live here. I’m just passing through.” She was about to continue when Marc’s phone started ringing. “Sorry, I have to get this.” Jessica continued, “I’m going to stay here, and then head south and do some work in Wheatland. I heard there was a fairly well known professor. Have you heard of a Professor Ferne?” “Actually I’m doing some regional research for him.” Matt answered. “We can help you around Wheatland if you need any help.” At that moment Marc re-entered with a heavy sigh. “Looks like we won’t be able to make it to Capital city.” He slumped into one of the open chairs.

“There’s a road-block going north, so we’ll have to go down toward Cascades, and take Granite-way from there, or maybe take a train.” This was the chance both had been waiting for. “Perhaps we could….” “Maybe we should…” They spoke at the same time, but Matt insisted that Marc finish. “It looks like we could split the difference and each go separate ways. I’ve wanted to check out Cascades, and I know you have some other places you want to check out.”

Matt was feeling very good about this chance. They both didn’t like the idea of travelling from Wheatland all the way to Traveler’s City. It was a long trip, and it would mean a lot of boring computing along with a driven sibling pushing him along. It had been a long and eventful day, and now it was about time to call it a day and turn in. Marc, Matt, and Jessica all set off to their rooms and the brothers packed up for the next day’s decisions.

The Michi Region is a custom campaign settings for PokeMon. Michi Region is based loosely around the Midwest of the United States of America. The setting and this wiki are both still a work in progress.
The primary goal of this wiki is to provide a space for the co-authors to build out the universe.
